Walter Brown 1872 to 1951

Ex-King’s Own veteran

 Members of the King’s Own Royal Regiment at Bowerham Barracks Depot acted as bearers at the funeral of ex- Band Sergeant Walter Brown, of 95 Bowerham Road, Lancaster, at Scotforth Cemetery on Thursday. Mr. Brown who was born in London had served 23 years in the Army.

 

After joining the Oxfordshire Light Infantry, he transferred to the King’s Own Royal Regiment, taking part in such notable military occasions as the Chitral campaign, the relief of Ladysmith and the battle of Spion Kop.

 

Leaving the Army in 1909, with the rank of Band Sergeant Mr. Brown came to Lancaster in 1915 and was engaged, in turn, as clarinet player at the Lancaster Hippodrome and Morecambe Winter Gardens. He later be came an agent for an assurance company and, although he retired in 1939, took up temporary work with the company during the war.

 

Aged 78, Mr. Brown was an honorary member Of the Lancaster Branch of the King’s Own Regimental Association.

 

Chief mourners at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Brown, sons and daughters-in- law; Mr. and Mrs. J. Whitaker, son-in-law and daughter; Mr. R. Williams, nephew; Mesdames

The Royal Liver Friendly Society was represented at the funeral by Mr. E. Stakes, and the Pearl Assurance Company by Mr. M. Hodgson.
