 OLD ARMY ASSOCIATIONS RECALLED.

1st April 1943.

 Mrs. Eliza Mary Williams, whose funeral took place on Wednesday, was eighty-four years of age. She had been ill for some weeks, and died on Friday at 95, Bowerham-road, the residence of her daughter.

A native of Dover, Mrs. Williams lived for some years at Netley Hospital, Southampton. where her father was employed as master baker in the Army Medical Corps, before it became known as the R.A.M.C. She married Edwin Bannister Smith in 1881, and was widowed soon after the birth of their daughter Lily Bannister Smith in 1883.

In 1887 she came to Lancaster as the wife of Quartermaster-Sergt. Ellis Williams, who was transferred from Ireland to Bowerham Barracks.

Subsequently her husband entered civilian life, and set up in business as a grocer at 71, Bowerham-road. Later, they moved to the present promises at 1, Avondale-road, where Capt. Ellis W. Williams, her son, at present carries on the business.

During the last war Mrs. Williams was actively connected with the prisoner of war movement. In the early days of that conflict, three of her six sons were killed, and one, John, who is at present employed at Warrington, was wounded and taken prisoner., She leaves also two other sons and a married daughter.

Interment took place at Lancaster cemetery following a service by the Rev. P. Birney. The following mourners were present —Mr. and Mrs. Brown, (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. F. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. J. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. P. Williams (sons and daughters-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. J. Whittaker, and Mr. R. F. Brown.
